Employee Andrew Fowler Remembers Fallen Soldiers

Andrew Fowler

On Memorial Day I always make a point of going to visit the Lafayette Crosses on my way to work.
And today I’m so glad I went.

Just as I was just about to leave I met a guy named Andrew Fowler.
He served in Afghanistan in 2012.

He drove to Lafayette from Rodeo with his girlfriend.
He brought crayons, paint, brushes, and a couple of American flags.

There are hundreds of crosses on the hillside.
They represent the 7005 U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Andrew hiked up the hill and found two crosses that didn’t have names on them.
He put American Flags next to each of the crosses.

And then he started to write the names of two friends who he lost in Afghanistan.
Cpl. Bryant Luxmore and Sgt Jason Swindle.

First he wrote the names in crayon.
Then he was going to paint over them.
Unfortunately I had to leave before he was finished.

But as I was driving away I thought to myself:
“That’s why I go see the crosses every year.
Because you never know who you’re going to meet.
You never know what you’re going to see.”

Life is all about personal experiences.
And the experience I had today what such a great reminder of what Memorial Day is all about.
