BLACK GOLD – DESTROYING NATURAL RESOURCES IN WEST VIRGINIA

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Coal is a fossil fuel, one of the greatest source of energy in the world used to produce electricity. It is naturally occurring and is present in rock strata in layers called coal beds or seams. This ‘black gold’ covers the mountains of West Virginia and gets the nickname because it is a very lucrative financial source for the state. Coal covers the beautiful mountain top in West Virginia, but is it worth losing the state’s most valuable resource, water?

The Environmental Protection Agency revoked the permit for a 2300 acre mountain top removal mine on January 13, 2011. Seven miles of streams would be covered by the project. After a year of attempted negotiations, an agreement could not be reached to reduce the damage to the natural water resources the mining would inflict. Coal is the world’s second largest energy source, making it very valuable worldwide. A full quarter of the world’s supply is located in the United States. In 2009 alone, West Virginia mines produced over 144 million tons of coal.

West Virginia is facing the destruction of natural resources by continuing the mining project, not only dealing with the 2300 acre land damage, but the loss of the streams will cause damage to drinking water sources. From 1985 to 2001, 1200 miles of streams have been covered up or polluted and at least 535 miles since then. Iron and Manganese concentrations exceeded the EPA’s drinking water guidelines in at least 40% of the wells and 70% of the wells near reclaimed surface coal mines. The pollution usually contains arsenic mercury, lead, copper, and chromium. An EcoloBlue appliance conserves natural resources by utilizing the humidity in the air instead of reducing natural sources of water.

WATER RATE INCREASE HEADED YOUR WAY!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Have you noticed the slew of cities impacted by water rate increases? Many have already announced rate hikes and many more are planning increases soon. These are not all small percentages either; in fact, they range from 3% to even 25% increases.  The Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power are calling for a 5% increase. The list of potential rate hikes include Palo Alto, Seaside, Port Richey, Sioux Falls, Iowa American Water, Fairfax, East Bay Municipal, Warrenton, Grosse Ponte Woods, American Fork, Jennings, Funkstown, San Luis Obispo, Jefferson Co, Westboro, Santa Barbara, Atlanta, Algood, King George, Rock Hill, St. Clair, Kennewick, Porterdale, Arcata, Lexington, Swartz Creek, Columbia, Northeast Ohio, and so on and so on.

So, what is the reason for the hikes? Please feel free to email me and let me know why it is happening in your area and I will add it to the growing list. [email protected]

The customers of Iowa American Water are asking why and are voicing their concerned as they are struggling to pay yet another increase in utilities. To help ease the burden of the increase, some utility companies are spreading the rate increases over time.  Many are taking up to three years to span up to reach their 25% rate hikes goal. Still many have not been very clear on the intention for such a rise in fees and. others have included multiple increases in budget plans. Glendora Water Commission approved a three year 10% increase to assist in funding water division and construction costs, which includes higher energy costs and rising cost of water they purchase to distribute to customers. They also say rates SHOULD stabilize in 2015 or 2016. Even though we are not sure what is causing so many increases across the nation, it does not appear that there is an end in sight.  Get involved in your community and monitor your city’s rates and you won’t be surprised if or when your rates drastically increase.

EcoloBlue - Water Solution because Mother Knows Best

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

As a mother, I share the passion to make sure that our children are healthy, by eating healthy foods and drinking safe water. Moms are always reading labels and checking the safety of all the products our kids come in contact with. How often do you read the label on bottle water? That’s right-- there is no ingredient label or label indicating the place of origin. Where did most of the water come from before it went into that bottle? We don’t know. They don’t have to tell us. There is an addition of fluoride in some of the cutie kid water bottles. A child receives fluoride in toothpaste, at school in a mouth swish cup, in tap water, and now in some bottled water. How much fluoride does it take to deteriorate your teeth? Is it less for kids than adults?

A Global Water Crisis
Growing public awareness of the environmental impact of bottled water—along with the contamination, privatization, and rapid disintegration of municipal water supply systems—has created an undeniable need for pure, safe, and ecologically responsible drinking water alternatives. Increasingly, water has become a severely limited resource for regions around the globe. About one-third of the world’s population lives in countries that are experiencing water stress.

Water scarcity is typically caused by dry climates, drought, desiccation, or water stress. Water scarcity caused by drought has killed over 24,000 people a year since the 1970’s, and over 40% of the world’s population now experiences water shortages that threaten their agriculture and industry as well as their personal health. Today over a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and by 2025 at least 3 billion people in 90 different countries are expected to face severe water stress. The problem is not just a shortage of water, but also the wasteful and unsustainable use of available water supplies.

DRINKING WATER AWARENESS WEEK!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Clean.  Refreshing.  Sustaining. Water. The body of every human in the world demands drinking water every day just to survive. The quality of that drinking water will determine how the body thrives or dies. The very definition of drinking water or potable water is “water of high quality that can be consumed or used with very low risk of immediate or long term harm.” Would you assume that everyone around the world or even in every area of the United States would have this definition of drinking water available to them?  Years ago, perhaps most would have answered that all or the majority of American citizens would have access to drinking water. Over the last few years, the awareness that all parts of the U.S. do not have access to a municipal water source is coming to light. There is a greater awareness about the quality of the water in the wells and other outside municipal water systems as well as the municipalities. There is a growing concern for nitrates in ground and well water systems. Arsenic, iron and manganese levels are also higher in these water sources. There are regulations in place for municipal water systems to reduce contamination. The concern is that there are certain things not required to test for, elevated levels of restricted materials often take years to reduce, plumbing infrastructure contributes to leeching toxic materials into the water and there are daily water main breaks allowing contamination into the lines. Human negligence is not something we think about. However, there has been concern and even conviction of employees who failed to test the water and falsified documentation to say the water was within limitations of restricted materials, even when levels were elevated. Daily drinking of excessively high minerals and other contaminants slowly poison the body. This poisoning of the body’s systems often causes cancer, brain damage, or other diseases.

With all this information in mind, this blog is meant to bring awareness to drinking water in general and not to water systems. It is important that you know the quality of your drinking water is essential. It is also imperative that you know what can happen to your body if you do not have quality water. However, there is a message in this blog that I would like for you to take away for drinking water awareness week, as I continue to explain.

What is the most important aspect of drinking water awareness you should be concerned about? As we all know, water is vital to the body’s functions. Without water the human body cannot survive, let alone thrive. What we do not realize is the amount of water we should be drinking daily to ensure the best impact on our body. There is information about drinking too much water can be harmful to the body and not drinking the right kind of water can be harmful as well. So, as the primary message of this blog, what kind and how much water should you drink daily?  This is an easy question with a not so easy answer. There is no great formula to calculate this in standard measure for every person. The basic recommendation is reported in most research as the average healthy adult living in a temperate climate should consume approximately 6 to 8 cups of water per day. For your particular body, consider either a replacement approach by drinking a little more than 8 cups to replenish the average amount lost through daily functions or the 8 x 8 rule of drinking eight 8 oz glasses of fluid daily. The daily dietary report from The Institute of Medicine has shown that men consume an average of 13 cups of beverages and women consume an average of 9 cups of beverages daily. The kind of water you drink should be considered when you realize that food and water provide the required minerals needed for the body’s functions. The EcoloBlue appliances utilize a re-mineralization process that provides essential minerals in your 99.9% pure drinking water. If you have a question about how much water you should consume daily, contact your physician to discuss your particular needs.

EcoloBlue Response to the Recent Japanese Nuclear Accident

Dear Everyone:

EcoloBlue appreciates your recent inquiry concerning the radiation which the Fukushima nuclear disaster has put into the atmosphere above Japan.  That low-level, but measurable, radiation has, in turn, increased measurable quantities of radiation over a large landmass area virtually worldwide.  Initially, any excess radiation rises from the reactor area and is then carried by prevailing west-to-east winds (convection thermals).  Some fraction of the total incremental radiation is precipitated from the atmosphere while the winds carrying it are traveling over cooler water bodies, such as the Pacific Ocean.  Thereafter, when over the United States, a very small percentage of the residual particles in the “radiation cloud” reaches land in this country (see http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weather/news/fukushima?LANG=en&VAR=euradsfc for a modeling of the Caesium 137 isotope component, which descends onto United States territory corresponding to the near-surface, the 2,500 meter ags (above-ground) level, and the 5,000 meter ags level).  Later, the air mass travels over the Atlantic Ocean and its contaminant load is again attenuated by natural physical processes which have been successfully cleansing the atmosphere for billions of years.  Thereafter, inhabited land masses to the east receive increasingly smaller dosage from descending particles to which the radiation has adhered.

One can see from the particular computer modeling referenced herein that the measured ground dosages for the United States have ranged from 0.001 to 0.1 becquerel level.  The becquerel (“Bq”) is the international measurement unit for radioactivity.  One Bq is defined as the activity of a quantity of radioactive material in which one atomic nucleus decays per second.  In a fixed mass of radioactive material, the number of becquerels changes with time.  Therefore, a sample radioactive decay rate is always stated with a timestamp for short-lived isotopes, sometimes after adjustment to some specific date of interest (in the past or in the future).

For example, one might quote a ten-day adjusted figure, that is, the amount of radioactivity that will still be present ten days in the future.  As a comparison measure-ment, the average human experiences 4400 becquerels merely from the decay of naturally-occurring potassium within the body.  It is generally known that potassium is a beneficial human nutrient, and, for comparison, the most widely used USP nutritional supplement in the United States contains 80 mg (milligrams) of potassium.

The referenced model demonstrates that the near ground surface level of the United States, as a whole, is likely being exposed to only from 0.001 to 0.1 Bq.  (Calculations and modeling performed through the Rheinischen Instituts für Umweltforschung [Environmental Research], University of Koln, Germany).

As a humanitarian offer to the people of Japan who are either without water due to the fracturing of the underground potable water supply in their geographic area or whose potable supply has become contaminated by Fukushima contamination due to contamination of the surface water bodies (reservoirs, ponds, rivers, and streams) which provide the source water for municipal distribution to them, EcoloBlue has made a number of its industrial-size units available to the Japan government without charge.  Part of EcoloBlue’s offer to Japan included the testing of the produced water by the world’s largest internationally-certified analytical laboratory.  However, to date, the Japanese government has not issued the documents which will allow many types of offered aid, including EcoloBlue’s source of life-saving water, to receive customs clearance at the border.

As you can surmise, the cost of performing α, β, and γ-ray testing on drinking water samples produced by EcoloBlue residential and small-office devices currently in use throughout the United States, which would involve taking at least two samples at each separate location involved, would be astronomical, and well beyond the capability of any company of EcoloBlue’s size.  It was the intention of EcoloBlue to perform sampling of the nucleotide radiation at the location of each industrial device which EcoloBlue anticipated would be accepted eagerly by Japan, and to compare the AWG-generated water with atmospheric contamination in the locations in which the devices would be used in AWG mode, or with the input water supply in those locations where the industrial units were used connected to a contaminated (including potentially  radiologically contaminated) source of input water.  However, since EcoloBlue’s units have not yet been installed in Japan, it has been impossible to perform such testing, which would be relevant to the performance of the home/office machines as well.

What EcoloBlue can tell you is that the human health risk of any negative outcome arising from drinking from an installed, properly used and properly maintained EcoloBlue home/office device is extremely low, possibly as low as one in one hundred million, given the results of testing performed in the United States to date of increased radiation levels in air and potable water sources.

We hope that you will continue using your EcoloBlue AWG as you have before the tragic Fukushima incident, and that you will continue to be vigilant in performing maintenance as specified in your instruction materials on a schedule at least as frequent as recommended by us.  Thank you for your loyalty to our company’s products.

SOLAR PREDICTIONS BY DA VINCI AND OTHER INTERESTING SOLAR FACTS!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

There are approximately 2 billion people in the world without electricity or any viable access to it in the near future. America accounts for over a quarter of the world’s energy consumption but with only 5% of the world’s population. How does the world’s energy needs continue to be met when the population continues to rise? Energy has been on our minds for a very long time and so has finding alternate sources to sustain the growing needs of the global population.

As far back as 1447, Da Vinci made predictions of solar industrialization by using concave mirrors to heat water. The worldwide production of solar cells saw an increase of 60% in 2004. However, since then the silicone material needed for production has decreased in availability stifling further increases in production. Would it surprise you to know that the world’s largest solar electric system was created by Germany? It was a 10 megawatt Bavaria Solarpark with 57,600 photovoltaic panels covering 63 acres. However, in the Mojave Desert is the world’s largest solar power plant covering 1000 acres of solar reflectors, which is 90% of the world’s currently produced solar power for commercial use.

Approximately half of the worldwide production of solar panels is consumed by Japan used mainly for grid connected residential use. Israel is building a 100 Megawatt solar power plant to supply more than 200,000 people with power. There are even plans to build a larger 500 megawatt power plant, which would make Israel the leader in solar energy. Shell has predicted that 50% of the world’s energy will come from renewable resources. In fact, they will join in a massive renewable energy project for future development. It appears that the majority of the world is looking to solar energy as a viable resource.

Solar Watt: How to determine the solar power you need.

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

The next step after learning about solar energy and how to capture it is the amount of wattage you will need to power your device. Electrical power is measured in watts. Energy consumption is measured in kiloWatt hours (kWh). Thus, solar energy is measured in kiloWatt Hours. Consider that 1000 Watts is equal to 1 kiloWatts. The next step is understanding the calculation used to determine the kilowatt hour. Simply, the kilowatt hour is determined by the amount of electricity used in kilowatts multiplied by the number of hours the energy is used. The calculation would indicate the amount of time, such as one day, one month or one year. The best example would be if you had a 100 watt light bulb on for 10 hours during a 24 hour period, then the consumption would be determined as: 100/1000(kWh)  x 10 (hours)= 1kW per day. To determine monthly usage you would factor the same equation times 30. The breakdown would be as follows:

100/1000(kWh)  x 10 (hours) x 30 (days) = 30 kWh hours per month

The U.S. Department of Energy identified that in 1999, the average American household utilized an approximate 866 Kilowatt Hours per month. The first question that I had after hearing that is what part of that is related to water. It is reported that 30% of our total energy consumption is utilized to heat water. A home solar system is typically made up of solar panels, an inverter, a charge controller, wiring and support structure. You can find this in the EcoloBlue Deluxe Solar Panel Packages with the atmospheric water generator appliances.

UTILIZING SOLAR PANELS

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Solar power is a great way to start your green modifications and get off the grid. Now that you know it exists, what exactly can you do with it? Solar energy can be used in your home or even your business. This is a great energy source to power small items around your home or heat and power your entire home. You can power outside your home, such as your garage, pool, outside lighting, etc.  Solar power can be used to heat your home, light your home, heat your water heater or pool, power and charge small devices, and also operate your EcoloBlue appliances. You may connect your solar into your grid to alternate power sources. However, please note that you are not off the grid if your solar is tied into your home’s electricity. In fact, some electrical companies welcome you to tie your solar into your home’s electricity so that the company is able to utilize your stored solar energy for their use as well.

Not all solar panels are the same. You must determine the size of the solar panel you want to use or build by the devices you want to power. Every device requires different wattage of solar to operate. Please note that the device will use a different solar wattage than electrical. For example, the EcoloBlue 30 appliance will use 280 watts of electricity, but it requires a 300 watt solar panel to operate.  Keep in mind that solar panel wattage is not what it may appear. A 300 watt panel may only capture 260 watts of energy from the sun during certain periods of the day. Therefore, it is very important to determine the wattage you need for specific devices.

SOLAR REVOLUTION: Solar Cell vs. Solar Panel and How Are They Used?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Solar energy is all a buzz recently for a new green friendly generation of off the grid power. Sifting through all of the information for solar energy, you can become inundated with the terminology of the new technology fairly quickly. The most basic question is what is a solar cell and how is it different from a solar panel? Even though the concepts can get complicated, there is a simple answer to the question. A solar cell is a solid state device that converts energy from the sun directly into electricity. This process is called a photovoltaic effect (photo meaning light/voltaic meaning electric). The difference between the cell and panel are simply in assembly. Putting solar cells together creates a solar modular, also known as solar panels. The energy that is generated from this process is known as solar power. To make use of the energy generated from solar cells, the electricity is fed into the electrical grid using an inverter. You can also have a stand-alone system in which batteries would be used to store the energy that is captured and not utilized immediately. Solar Panels are used to provide power to a variety of devices. Solar power can also be used to recharge devices. They are so versatile that you can power something as small as your cell phone to as large as your entire house. Just remember if you are looking for an off the grid solution, keep your solar off the grid.

SOLAR POWER- THE GREATEST ENERGY SOURCE

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Solar power has become a great source of energy. This form of power is energy that comes directly from the sun. As a plentiful source, even the small amount of sunlight touching the earth could produce over 8000 times the energy to meet the demand of the entire population. The use of solar energy is completely free and there are no worries of depletion. In fact, you can use as much as you can harvest from the sun. There have been many new technological advances to harvest and utilize solar energy. Solar energy can be used to power small items, such as calculators or coffee pots. It can also be used as a power source for your entire home.

Solar energy is a great choice of power for a positive environmental impact. There is no fuel, as with coal, oil, kerosene and other energy sources. These historical forms of energy produce fumes, chemicals and other pollutants, but there is no pollution with solar energy. Additionally, there is no waste expelled with solar energy compared to other forms. The sustainability and the independence that solar power brings you is well worth your investment. Solar energy can get you off the grid, leaving you water independent if you choose an EcoloBlue solar option.

COULD YOU USE YOUR GLASS OF DRINKING WATER AS A SCIENCE PROJECT?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

What you say if you were told that the U.S. is not required to screen for parasites, such as amoebas in your water.  Even though latest studies show they can carry serious waterborne diseases that affect humans.  Drinking water systems around the world suffer from amoeba contamination. These amoebas are responsible for sparking diseases from rapid brain inflammation to blinding eye infections. They also carry diseases that multiply inside the cell and are resistant to the disinfectant agents that water treatment plants use. In a recent study of water systems, 26 studies from 18 countries showed amoeba contamination in all drinking water systems. In fact, 16 studies that checked for tap water contamination found it in 45 percent.

Thinking this will not happen to your family? Well, years ago, two young Arizona boys died from encephalitis, a fatal brain disease. Although chlorine limits amoeba contamination, it does completely ensure safety. Areas with well water that has not been treated are especially susceptible. It is believed that the boys got the amoebas from submerging in their tub during a bath.  Unfortunately, the reality is that we are not completely protected from things we cannot see. However, EcoloBlue is a step toward knowing your glass of drinking water is not a science project.

WATER COMTANMINATION RISK – 700 TIMES A DAY!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Do you check your local news for boil water advisories due to water main breaks every morning before you take a drink of water or brush your teeth? If not, are you at risk of serious water contamination every day? Experts report that across the U.S., more than 700 water main breaks are responded to daily. Washington D.C. is riddled with water main breaks, reportedly suffering as many as 300 in a two weeks span in December alone. "Anytime you're breaking the seal of the system that brings water into your homes and apartments, you're risking contamination from bacteria and viruses," said Eric Goldstein, member of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). A broken water main can create havoc on roadways or residential areas and can be a serious threat to public health.

The drinking water system of the nation is in despair. Our failing infrastructure is one of the contributing factors to water quality concerns across the U.S. Leaking pipes are reported to waste  7 billion gallons of water per day, according to The American Society of Civil Engineers, who also gave a grade of D minus in their 2009 Report Card of America’s Infrastructure.  Infrastructure was identified by the NRDC as the culprit of a 2008 salmonella outbreak causing more than 250 people to become ill.

One of the reasons for the failing infrastructure is age. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that 30% of the pipes in water delivery structures to 100,000 people are 40 to 80 years old. An additional 10% of pipes in those same systems are even older. Now that the problem has been identified, why is it not being fixed? Instead of continually repairing only the pipes that burst and need immediate attention, why not re-do the entire plumbing infrastructure? The answer is not as simple as the question. New technology may hinder an overhaul of the water infrastructure. There are: cable, phone, electrical, fiber optic and other lines in the under-land of the city that we not there with the first water delivery infrastructure system.  It is estimated that revamping this system may cost well over 335 billion dollars and take over 20 years to complete. D.C. is replacing the oldest cast iron (pre-civil war) pipes at a rate of 11 miles per year to work toward a newer system with less water main breaks. In the meantime, water quality is a concern and residents will still need to boil their water before using it when there has been a break in their area.

Get up in the morning and drink your glass of water with confidence that you are drinking uncontaminated, clean and delicious water. Feel secure when grabbing a cup of coffee or making dinner or brushing your teeth. Forget about the worry and inconvenience of checking the local news on tv or turning on the radio. Place an EcoloBlue appliance in your home and feel safe that your family is not in danger of water contamination.

IS TAP WATER SAFE FOR YOUR HOUSE PLANTS?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Poor water quality not only prevents your flowers from flourishing, but it can burn or even kill them. Are you considering the quality of water used for your household plants? There are a variety of chemicals in tap water that will not allow your house plants to reach to their full potential and beauty. The use of tap water is more dangerous to house plants than outdoor plants. This is due to the chemicals used to treat tap water which collects in the soil around the plants. Outdoor plants have the benefit of rainwater that washes away most of the chemicals left behind from the tap water. However, indoor plants never receive the benefit of rain water so the chemicals continue to collect in the soil with every watering.

There are a number of reasons why tap water may not be the greatest for your plants and flowers in your home. Chlorine is a chemical that is used to disinfect your water supply and it is lethal to your house plants. Signs of poor water quality damage can be brown or yellow leaf tips and veins, root burn and failure to bloom. Hard water has an excessive amount of magnesium and calcium which collect in the soil and cause damage. Salt is also added to some water supplies to prevent hardness. The salt also causes significant damage to plants. Over time, even filtered tap water can leave unwanted deposit buildup that can harm your plants. This buildup will present as a thin white colored crust on the top of the soil or on the leaves. If you see this, flush the plants and soil to remove the deposits at least once a year. Fluoride is another toxic chemical that house plants just cannot handle. In addition to all the chemicals, if the ph level is unbalanced in the tap water, it can be damaging or lethal to the plants. So, if tap water and filtered tap water are harmful to the flowers and plants in your home, what water allows them to be healthy?

The Organic Administrative Act of 1897 states the forest reserves were responsible to protect and enhance water supplies, reduce flooding, secure water flow, protect from forest fires and depredations as well as provide a continuous supply of timber. National forests in the West continue to operate today as they did in 1915 with the original 162 million acres. Public demands for land forests in the East resulted in the passing of the 1911 Weeks Act, which allowed the acquisition of Federal lands to protect watersheds.  This also reported on the role of forests in water supplies. This would include water quantity, water quality, flood reductions and economic benefit of tree cover for storm water reduction in urban areas.

According to the Water Quality Association, reverse osmosis filtered water at room temperature is the best water is the best for watering household plants. The humidity around your plants also plays a vital role in how your plants grow.

EcoloBlue appliances clean the air in your home, stabilize the humidity around your plants, and provide reverse osmosis filtered water- all of which provide all the right conditions for your flowers and plants to flourish.

UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF THE U.S.D.A. FOREST SERVICE

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

The water in the atmosphere is completely regenerated every 8 days!  The U.S.D.A. Forest Service has been committed to protect our water and national forests since the inception of forest reserves in 1891!

The federally protected forest reserves were started in 1891 as a result of public concern for maintaining adequate supplies of clean water. Having healthy forests are imperative to maintaining clean water supplies. Forests are so vital because they provide approximately 80% of the scarce freshwater resources in the United States. The forested lands soak in rainfall, which refills ground aquifers, reduces speed of the storm runoff, minimizes flooding, cools and cleanses rainfall, supports watersheds, as well as provides vital habitat for fish and other wildlife.

From the beginning, water has played a part in developing forested areas, deciding settlement areas, routes of travel and transportation and has shaped land use.  Considering approximately two-thirds of the nation’s runoff comes from forested areas, without protected forest areas, there would be a fatal impact on plant and animal life as well as the nation’s water supply as a whole. Over a third of national forest lands and waters have been identified to play a critical role in aquatic biodiversity and anchoring species.

Water is not only vital for all life in forest lands across the U.S., but it is vital to all human life as well. The necessity of water to all life creates a monetary value for it as well. The U.S.D.A. Forest Service reports the value of water from national forest lands to be more than 3.7 billion dollars annually.  The Forest Service recognizes the overall value of water and has created a specific plan to continue to protect this precious resource. The growing population has impacted natural water resources and forested areas. The population of the West has increased by 50 percent over the last 20 years and is said to increase an additional 300 percent by 2040.

The Forest Service identifies part of their role is to protect instream water flow and groundwater. That role demands that they provide an active participation in the processes that allocate surface water, ground water, and water rights. They identify as part of their role, that their participation must be timely and of the highest standards of technical quality. The Forest Service commits to ‘systematically restore damaged watersheds on the national forests, mitigate additional watershed damage from the land uses and the inevitable major wildfires, and foster partnership efforts to meet the most pressing watershed restoration needs when they fall outside of national forest boundaries’.

Approximately 1 percent of the earth’s water is available to provide us with drinking water. That water goes through a renewal process, but the rates of renewal are very different. The nonrenewable resources because when people use or degrade these water supplies, the useable water resources are lost and natural water cycles may be disrupted. The renewal periods for glaciers, groundwater, ocean water, and lakes can be up to hundreds or even thousands of years. The flowing water in rivers is completely renewed on average every 16 days. The water in the atmosphere is renewed every 8 days. EcoloBlue utilizes this atmospheric water to generate a 99.9 percent pure water to drink.

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS DROWNING IN POLLUTANTS!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Can the Chesapeake Bay be restored? There are current efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as well as clean up the water. The Environmental Protection Agency is undertaking new regulations in a plan of restoring the 64 thousand square mile project. The plan is described as the largest ever undertaken in the history of the U.S.

Individual plans with six states are included in the overall restoration plan. The plan will significantly decrease the amount of pollutants that are choking the ecosystem and crippling the environment in the Bay. One of the problems is, the restoration goal is 2025. Unfortunately, there is so much damage and it encompasses so great of an area, it will take a significant amount of time to restore. Not only does the watershed area contain six states, but 17 million people as well. The 200 mile long Bay has been left with “dead zones” as a result of the pollution leaving the areas oxygen depleted from the algae blooms that prevent sunlight from reaching the marine life below.

The causes of this horrendous pollution is a result of farming and urban runoff as well as air pollution and sewer over flows. The plan calls for a 6.5 billion pound annual reduction in sediment alone. We are looking at this level of pollution all around the world, if we do not take preventative measures instead of restorative steps.

Our Estuaries, lakes, rivers, and streams are being impacted by waste every day. We need to stand up and keep our waters clean so that we do not have to spend years trying to clean them up. It is imperative that we take responsibility for the trash and chemicals that we each contribute to our own local bodies of water and aquifers

THYROID CALCIFICATION AND THYROID CANCER FROM YOUR WATER?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Most people are not familiar with thyroid calcification, but to understand either calcification or cancer, we need to know that the thyroid is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. These glands play an important role in how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins and controls the sensitivity level to hormones. Calcification occurs when calcium is collected in the soft tissue and becomes hardened. A diagnosis of thyroid calcification does not mean it is definitely cancer, but benign or malignant cancer cells may be present.

What does this have to do with water, you may be asking? There are various water contaminants, including nitrates and fluoride (yes, I said fluoride) that research says may contribute to these conditions. Long term exposure to nitrates can increase the risk of thyroid cancer which is the eighth most common cancer in women.  In the U.S., thyroid cancer has steadily increased since 1980. So there must be a significant factor in our daily lives causing this increase. Drinking unfiltered water is definitely a common denominator that exposes women to contaminants.  Since nitrates in water are higher in agricultural areas, there are higher numbers of thyroid cancer in those locations as well. As for fluoride, some studies have reflected serious concern that fluoride collects in the bones, similarly to calcium and can accelerate cell growth causing cancer.

Aside from nitrates and fluoride, a chemical in rocket fuel is also known to cause thyroid cancer. You may be thinking, how in the world could rocket fuel effect your drinking water and contribute to Thyroid Disease. It may impact you more than you realize. A chemical called Perchlorate is found in explosives, weapons, rocket fuel and the production of matches and fireworks.  It is also found in some tap and well water. Perchlorate is a regulated drinking water contaminant in California, up to 6mcl per liter, since 2007.  Barstow and Indio, California are the two most prevalent areas not allowed to drink their water due to this contamination. It has also been found in the Colorado River which supplies water to 15 million people. Clean up cost just to remove the Perchlorate from the Colorado River would include billions of dollars. So, it is unlikely a clean-up is occurring soon, leaving over 15 million people at risk for thyroid disease.

WORDS WORTH REPEATING

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

A few months ago, I read an article about the human right to water and sanitation. It was informative as well as interesting to learn about the international view of humans having a basic right to clean water and sanitary conditions. Humans have already been established to have a basic right to many things, such as human right to life, food and other standards of living. However, it took many decades for there to be a written acknowledgment to include the right to have clean water and sanitation.

I would like to thank Dr. Peter Gleick, the author of the article entitled, “The Human Right to Water, At Last” who graciously granted me permission to reprint his article as part of EcoloBlue Education. – Regina Davis, M.S.Q.M.H.P

The Human Right to Water, At Last

by Dr. Peter Gleick

I've often daydreamed about what an alien civilization would think about Earth if it were ever to come visit, given our fractured ethnic, political, and economic planet, the epidemic violence, our ecological ignorance and mismanagement, the miserable way so many people live in poverty and misery, and our global failure to eradicate basic diseases such as cholera that simply require safe water and sanitation systems available to everyone reading this column.

Indeed, as Calvin says to Hobbes in Bill Watterson's classic cartoon, "Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us."

One of these global failures was the failure to acknowledge a formal human right to water. There is a formal international human right to life, to human health, to an adequate standard of living, to adequate food, and more. But until a few weeks ago, there was no formal human right to water.

There is now. On September 24th, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva adopted a binding resolution that
"Affirms that the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation is derived from the right to an adequate standard of living and inextricably related to the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, as well as the right to life and human dignity."

This declaration was a long time coming. The planet's bedrock political and civil human rights laws were put in place over 60 years ago. The United States played a leading role in formulating and supporting those laws, in line with our democratic principles, our commitment to rights, and our national character. And while there are occasional controversies over definitions, and occasional government policies that ignored or flouted these principles and rights, the US continues to be a leading voice for these rights.

Conversely, the United States has not played a leading role in, and indeed has often been in opposition to, extending human rights law into the area of social, economic, and cultural rights, even though major international covenants covering these rights were passed by the UN in the 1960s. And the US has never supported a human right to water. Until now.

More than a decade ago, I wrote a journal article on the human right to water that stated:

"Access to a basic water requirement is a fundamental human right implicitly and explicitly supported by international law, declarations, and State practice... access to water can be inferred as a derivative right necessary to meet the explicit rights to health and an adequate standard of life."

And in subsequent years, discussions and negotiations expanded at the UN, in national governments, in international water meetings, and in academia about the justification for such a right and the responsibilities and duties that would accompany it. The negotiations over this right dragged on and on, with the US and a few other countries consistently opposed to extending human rights law to water. The long discussions finally ended with a General Assembly resolution in July, followed by the UN's Human Rights Council formal resolution in late September, and on September 30th, the US government (somewhat grumpily, I think) affirmed its agreement with these resolutions. In their statement explaining their vote in favor, the US said:

"The United States is proud to take the significant step of joining consensus on this important resolution regarding the right to safe drinking water and sanitation, which is to be progressively realized. The United States remains deeply committed to finding solutions to the world's water challenges. Safe drinking water and sanitation are essential to the rights of all people to an adequate standard of living, and to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health."

This is a first step, not a last step. Will finally acknowledging a human right to water and sanitation solve the world's water and sanitation problems? No.

Water Number: 4 Good Reasons for the Human Right to Water.

But here are four reasons why it is a good idea:
1. Acknowledging such a right will encourage the international community and individual governments to renew their efforts to meet basic human needs for water for their populations.
2. By acknowledging such a right, pressures to translate that right into specific national and international legal obligations and responsibilities are much more likely to occur.
3. This clear declaration will help maintain a spotlight of attention on the deplorable state of water management in many parts of the world.
4. Finally, explicitly acknowledging a human right to water can help set specific priorities for water policy, which is often fragmented, uncoordinated, and focused on providing more water for some people, rather than some water for all people.

And there's a fifth reason: it's just the right thing to do.

What is needed now is to develop appropriate tools and mechanisms to achieve progressively the full realization of these rights, including appropriate legislation, comprehensive plans and strategies for the water sector, and financial approaches. As the UN has noted, the right to water also requires full transparency of the planning and implementation process in the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation and the active, free and meaningful participation of the concerned local communities and relevant stakeholders, including vulnerable and marginalized groups. And it is time to acknowledge that even here in the richest country of the world, there are people without access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, and to work harder to meet those needs as soon as possible.

In the end, I do not think that finally meeting basic needs for water and sanitation will occur just because there is finally a clear acceptance of a legal human right to water and rules for what governments must do to progressively realize those rights. But it is certain to help accelerate the day when safe water and sanitation are available for all. Whether anyone out there is watching or not.

NATURAL WAYS TO ADD FLAVOR TO YOUR ECOLOBLUE WATER!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Citrus- Fresh fruit? Sure, but also try frozen!

Calamondin (Kalamansi)- small citrus fruit, popular in Southeast Asia can be used as an ice cube! Freeze the small fruit, place in glass and as you pour water over it, the flavors will infuse the water with a sweet tart citrus taste. Grapefruit, lemon juice or whole lemon and lime or also fabulously citrusy!

Enjoy crisp clean taste? Add cucumber slices to your pitcher of water. The slices not only add a crisp, but add fragrance to the water as well.

Need help clearing your sinuses? Ginger gives a spicy zing to your pallet! Add to hot water to clear your nose and throat during the winter.

Like it sweet? Try some strawberries or blueberries! Cut or crush a few in your water to have a glass of sweet-berry flavor. Cherry juice is also a great addition!

Enjoy a glass of wine? Enjoy adding umesha or plum wine! A very sweet Japanese liqueur made from green plums. Include one part wine to ten parts water, to have a relaxing evening during the stressful holiday season.

Like it tart? Give apple cider vinegar a shot! It adds a bit of vitamin C to your tart flavor.

Get your vitamins as you add aroma and a hint of green color! If you are more into herbs, you can use many to infuse your water! Adding parsley provides the same amount of vitamin c as one orange, four times the amount of iron as a cup of spinach and more vitamin A than a cup of red bell peppers. Lemongrass, mint, thyme, senna (digestion) and lavender (relaxation) are all great herbs with healthy purpose. Add to hot water for teas as well.

Honey, I LOVE it sweet! Add a bit of honey as a natural sweetener instead of sugar or sugar substitutes.

Include slices of cucumber or whole fruits, small kalamansi, or even herbs to your water pitchers make beautiful and festive holiday displays that your guests will love!

HOW MUCH WATER IS THAT?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

In the United States, we use over 2.5 million water bottles every hour. In 2008 alone, 16 billion dollars was spent on bottled water. Those are staggering numbers, but do you ever wonder how much water it takes to make all those water bottles as well as all the products we use every day?

How much water goes into an average size bottle of water? Add an additional 1.85 gallons of water to the water inside the 8 oz. bottle. We probably only think about the water we are consuming in that small bottle, but not the water it takes to make the plastic for that one bottle. Would it surprise you to know it takes 53 gallons of water to make that one latte that many of us stop in the mornings to get?

Water is a primary product from the beginning in all of the products we use. Not just in what we drink, our food, our clothing, but even in our vehicle manufacturing as well. It takes 1800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to manufacture one pair of jeans. Your favorite t-shirt requires 400 gallons of water to produce. I was most surprised at the 39,000 gallons of water it takes to make one car. With all this water usage and consumption every day, how can we not be more aware of the need to protect our water sources and conserve when we can?

THE WORLD’S ENDLESS SUPPLY OF WATER IS ABOUT TO END

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

I have received a great deal of feedback about the “endless supply” of water in the water, so I want to address the questions and comments. The fresh water supply is so scarce that one in five people (over 884 million) do not have access to safe drinking water. Only 2.5% of the world’s water is not salty. Two thirds of that small percent is icecaps and glaciers. About 20% of the remaining portion is in remote locations and comes in unwanted ways, such as monsoons and floods. The world’s water percent that is actually available to humans is less than .07%. Over the next two decades, the world’s water use is expected to increase by 40%.

In 1999, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provided a report that 200 scientists in 50 countries identified a water shortage. The scientists also reported that it is one of the two most prominent problems. Where is all this water going? It is estimated that 70% of the water used is directed toward agriculture. The World Water Council reported that by 2020, we will need 17% more water for agriculture (just to produce our food supply) than what is available in the world. So, not only will we go to bed thirsty, we will also be hungry. Today, every 20 seconds, a child dies from a disease directly related to a lack of clean water. If there were an endless supply of water, I would certainly hope we could change those statistics.

IS WATER A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

In December 1948, 58 member states of the United Nations General Assembly agreed to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Thus, declaring political, economic, social and cultural rights inherent to each human being. Over 60 years later, 192 member General Assembly announced a new addition to that historic declaration. In 2010, water and sanitation were recognized as a basic human right. Although, there were no votes in opposition, 41 countries abstained from the vote and 122 countries voted in favor. The United States was one of the 41 to abstain from the vote.

There is a formal international right to human life, to human health, to a sufficient standard living and to adequate food. So, why has it taken so long to acknowledge the importance of water in human survival? Why are there deplorable water standards around the world and will this declaration help clean the world’s water supplies? Perhaps these questions cannot be answered, at least, not yet. It should prompt us, as the human race that depend so greatly upon clean water, to hold the people who can answer these questions accountable to help provide clean water. We waited around for over 60 years for water to be recognized as a vital human survival component. It should not take another 60 years to make sure the generations that follow us conserve, protect and clean our water resources.

NEW FALL COLORS: For your drinking water?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

When you hear the words “fall colors,” do you immediately feel warmth on a fall day? I feel soothing emotions as I picture all the beautiful oranges, browns and yellows of the leaves falling from the trees. In a nut shell, it invokes a safe, comfortable feeling of transition from one season to another. If I said the water coming from you tap has the new fall color, would you not feel a sense of safe transition subconsciously?  However, if I said the water coming from your tap is a variety of orange and brown, would you still feel safe?

The citizens of Portland are experiencing this same issue with their tap water. The bureau says not to worry about the “fall color” coming from your tap, it is a normal occurrence. They blame it on run off from the flush of organic material into streams and the reservoir. The water utility says not to be concerned because the water still meets federal standards to drink. Should we look at what those standards are before we allow our families to consume fall colored water?  Importantly, you should know the water from this system in unfiltered. The bureau’s website is clear to indicate in the first section not to drink your water if it is brown. The description of the brown water being caused by a disturbance in a water main is not consistent with the explanation given a few paragraphs later that it is due to organic run off. However, they go on to say how safe it is to drink. Do they recommend to drink it or don’t they? I was confused doing the research on Portland’s water system, as I am sure the citizens are too.

DECLINING NATURAL RESOURCES CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASED WATER TOXICITY

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Arsenic is a naturally occurring colorless and odorless element in rock and soil used in various industry and agriculture processes. Arsenic has a reputation for being notoriously poisonous. Most people identify arsenic as a lethal chemical. So, why is it a concern when we think of our drinking water?

Many natural water sources are declining at a serious rate not only impacting our water supplies, but possibly increasing arsenic levels in our drinking water as well. When groundwater levels drop, arsenic dissolves out of the soil and rock contaminating the water source. Thousands of pounds of arsenic are also released into the environment by industry every year. Arsenic is then removed from the air by rain, snow and even just settling to the ground over time.

There is research on the correlation between arsenic and an increased risk of strokes. The Michigan based study shows the need to have more research information over a broader area to determine the specific connection. The report indicated that the risk of stroke hospitalization was more than double in areas of elevated arsenic levels in drinking water. The EPA allows up to ten micrograms per liter of arsenic in drinking water.

How do you take an active role to make sure your water does not contain arsenic? There is a list of labs available in your area that will conduct testing on your water supply for a fee. Boiling your water will not remove arsenic. In fact, the arsenic concentration increases as it boils. Chlorine bleach will not remove arsenic either. So, how do you make sure you are not drinking arsenic if you are unable to test for it? A reverse osmosis filter, ultra filtration, distillation, or ion exchange are options you can consider.

I AM DYING OF THIRST!
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

More importantly, have you ever really felt extreme thirst? Next to air, water is the most important thing to human survival. Therefore, to say water is important is a gross understatement. Water makes up over two-thirds of the weight of a human body. The human brain is comprised of ninety-five percent water, the lungs are made up of ninety percent and blood contains eighty-two percent. Without water the human body would die in a matter of days. In fact, if the body sees as much as a two percent drop in water, signs of dehydration begin. Fuzzy or short term memory, difficulty focusing on small print, inability to compute basic math, and even daytime fatigue are only a few symptoms of dehydration. Since drinking water sources are so widely available, why are over 75 percent of people mildly and chronically dehydrated?

Not only is water a vital necessity, it also prevents disease. Drinking eight glasses of water every day can decrease your risk of getting colon cancer by forty-five percent and up to fifty percent for bladder cancer. Water benefits the body by serving as a lubricant, regulating body temperatures, forming fluid around joints, and regulates metabolism among many other functions. So if water is so vital and beneficial to us, why do we take it for granted? Natural water resources are all around us. The problem is, we are very quickly depleting and destroying all of our natural water resources without plans to replenish. What can we do? Implement water saving and conservations techniques, help keep rivers, lakes and oceans clean, reduce pollution, and let your representative know you are concerned about preserving water sources. Make sure to drink water daily and make sure the water is free of contaminants and pharmaceuticals. EcoloBlue can help you and your family has safe, clean, delicious drinking water.

MINERALS IN YOUR WATER
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Minerals are essential to facilitate basic body functions. The right minerals in productive amounts benefit the human body in many ways. They keep nerve and muscle functions normal, grow connective tissues, regulate fluids, assist in controlling bone growth, keep metabolism up and a host of other benefits. In addition to helping the body, some minerals also improve the taste of water. Therefore, the food products made with the mineralized water taste better.

During the reverse osmosis process, contaminants are removed from the water. As part of the process, minerals are also taken from the water. EcoloBlue recognizes the importance of the right minerals in healthy quantities and incorporates a re-mineralization process. This process provides pure delicious water containing eleven of the minerals that are essential for your health.

Magnesium is one of those important minerals because it controls blood coagulation, energy production and muscle contraction as well as helping protect against diseases such as gastric cancer. Calcium is also essential to bone growth and nerve transmission. Sodium is naturally occurring in water due to underground salt deposits. In healthy amounts, sodium is necessary to carry nutrients throughout the body.  Potassium helps to reduce bone loss as well as reducing the risk of kidney stones. Zinc is one of the most important to develop the immune system to aid in resisting infections. Zinc is also imperative to the growth of body cells. It plays a vital role in children’s growth and development of the mind and body.

EcoloBlue makes sure your family is safe from contaminants, pharmaceuticals, and other harmful agents. Most importantly, EcoloBlue ensures your family receives the minerals needed for positive health and mind/body growth.

WATER CONTAMINANTS WE NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT!

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

I wanted to write about the most common water contaminants, but there are too many to write about in only a few paragraphs. Each water source is threatened by a different set of contaminants. Additionally, there is a vast range of health effects linked to each contaminant exposure. Just to give you an idea how many contaminants we are dealing with in our water supplies, I composed a list of a few.

Arsenic, Asbestos, Barium, Bacteria/Coliform, Cadmium, Chloradane, Chlorine, Chromium, Copper, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Fluoride, Giardia, Hydrogen Sulfide, Iron, Manganese, Mercury, Microbiological Contaminants, Nitrate/Nitrite, PCB, Pharmaceuticals (seemingly endless list in itself), Radium, Radon, Selenium, Sulfate, Total Dissolved Solids, Toxaphene, Trihalomethanes, Turbidity, Uranium, Viruses, Volatile Organic Compounds, Zinc and more.

It is impossible to ignore the concern we face every day to make sure our families have safe clean drinking water. Declare your water independence with EcoloBlue.

HERBICIDES CAUSE BIRTH DEFECTS: Babies born without limbs, ears, or visible sex organs due to ground water contamination

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Do you use weed killer around your home or live near a farm? Altrazine is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. Like many herbicides, it is sold under a variety of names.  This weed killer is both effective and inexpensive so it is used by many farmers. Approximately 76 million pounds of Altrazine was used in the United States in 2003 alone. Every spring since then, Midwest farmers apply 150 million pounds of herbicide and pesticides to their crop fields and it is leaching into our ground water.

A study released in February 2010 indicated that Altrazine increased the risk for birth defects. Researchers looked at 1 in 5000 infants were born yearly with gastroskisis, a condition where part of the intestines bulge thru a separation in the belly. Over the course of the last 3 decades that percentage has increased by 4 times as a result of the increased use of herbicides.

A report on an area of Florida showed that 3 deformed babies were born within a 7 week period to workers employed at the same farm. The infants had a variety of defects including no limbs, no ears, no visible sex organs and one was missing a nose. After all the evidence and commonalities linking the birth defects to farm chemicals, the state still said they could not be certain of the cause. In fact, the state said they did not know what caused 80 percent of birth defects. With the uncertainty of officials, we need to pay attention to what we and our neighbors put on the ground that may impact our children so dramatically.

MANGANESE IN DRINKING WATER CAUSES LOWER IQ SCORES IN CHILDREN

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

There is a misconception that well water is somehow better than city or county water. It actually has just as many natural toxins that are harmful to your family. Manganese is naturally occurring in the soil and is proven to have a negative impact on the human body. Therefore, those individuals who depend on wells for their supply of drinking water are the ones greatly affected. Unfortunately the impact of consuming this metal is greater on children.

A study in 2006 showed that boiling or storage had no effect on the levels of haloacetic acid. The only effective method to make sure the substance is decreased in your water is filtration. We should recognize that it is only decreased and is still present in the water just at a lower level. For years these by-products have been scrutinized for being a potential hazard to development and reproduction. There have been studies that looked at the effects of this chemical on pregnancy. Studies have also shown a possible link to stillbirths. A study in four regions of a Maryland county from 1998-2002 found an elevated risk for intrauterine growth retardation when exposed to the five haloacetic acids and total trihalomethanes. Research indicates that there is a link between exposure to haloacetic acids during the second/third trimester and birth defects. Cardiac, respiratory system, oral cleft and urinary tract were only a few of the marked defects found in studies of newborns.

Elevated amounts of Manganese are found in areas of Quebec and Canada. Research among 350 children in Quebec communities has shown that children whose drinking water contains Manganese display lower IQ scores than children not exposed. Not only does exposure affect IQ, but research shows concern for an impact on brain development. There are marked changes in behavior as well as a decrease in the ability to learn and remember. Research continues on whether the impacts are temporary or permanent and the level of vulnerability for children versus adults.

Now that we know about Manganese and that it has a serious impact on the future of our children, what action do we take to change it? Currently there are no laws regulating Manganese levels in drinking water, no surprise there. This is in part because well water is the most affected, which is not easily monitored by officials. Overburdened officials are not always helping to make sure all drinking water is safe, so we must make it our responsibility to protect our children and make sure they have every chance at health and success in life. CHLORINATION OF WATER FOUND TO HAVE CAUSED INTRAUTERINE GROWTH RETARDATION!
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Chlorinating the water helps kill bacteria, but it also causes birth defects. The chemicals used to disinfect our water are also creating by-products that are toxic to the human body. In fact, there are a group of chemicals that are created when the natural products in water come in contact with disinfectant products. Haloacetic acids are among the chemicals in that group of undesirable by-products as a result of chlorinating water.

Even though filtration may reduce levels of haloacetic acid, should we be satisfied with reduction instead of elimination? An EcoloBlue Atmospheric Water Generator would ensure that none of those chemicals are affecting your pregnancy or your newborn in a negative way. The CONVENIENCE of Water
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) scientists are predicting solar flares in 2012 that will affect everything as we know it. Electricity and other conveniences are obviously very important to the way we conduct our lives on a daily basis. Opposite conveniences however, is basic survival. When we think of any natural disasters we accept that the electricity may go out for a while, but it will eventually come back on and with it will come all of the other conveniences we are accustomed to. One of those conveniences is water, but we do sometimes take for granted that it may be out for a short period of time and will start to flow again in a matter of days. Water is at the top of the survival list and should always be the first question we ask in any possible emergency situation.

Water is also on the top of the list for scientists to discuss when they are looking at solar flares and the possibility that earth will be affected. NASA reported that a severe space weather event in the United States could bring about ground currents that may knock out 300 key transformers in a span of 90 seconds cutting the power to approximately 130 million people. They also report that the first convenience that will go after that is drinking water. Electricity pumps water through reservoirs so that we can receive it. One of the largest problems we may have is that the electrical grid is intertwined with other infrastructures that support our everyday functioning. Those would include water and sewer treatment facilities. Bottled water would only last for a short period of time then many people would be searching for ways to have potable water.

Like most, I pay attention to world events and scientific predictions, but I do not place a lot of focus on the reports made to invoke fear. I simply believe in being prepared for my family in the event of a disaster. It makes sense to prepare for a possible fire by having fire alarms and extinguishers in my home or purchasing car insurance in case of an accident. So it makes sense to prepare to have the one item that the human body cannot do without for more than a few days. In doing so much research and writing these blogs, I find more and more reasons why it is essential for my family to maintain water independence. With our EcoloBlue 30 and the Solar Panel Package, I know my family will have clean, safe drinking water should a natural disaster take place.  www.EcoloBlue.com

Ever Wonder Why Your Toothpaste Tube Says CONTACT POISON CONTROL if you swallow it?
by by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Fluoride is a powerful poison. In fact, it is the active ingredient in many pesticides and rodenticides, meant to kill cockroaches and rats. Why would we want to give this to our children? Just how toxic is this fluoride substance anyway? According to the Journal of Dental Research, there is enough fluoride in a tube of flavored children's toothpaste to be fatal to an average sized child under nine years old. Is it harmful or helpful to add fluoride in your tap water? There is a great debate going on with very strong opinions on both sides.

Sodium fluoride is a hazardous waste byproduct of the nuclear and aluminum industries. It is the basic ingredient in the medicine named Prozac as well as Sarin Nerve Gas. Yes, I did say nerve gas. Sarin is five-hundred times more toxic than cyanide. I really want you to know how dangers of Sarin Gas. After the initial symptoms of exposure to Sarin; like tightening of the chest and pupil constriction, the secondary symptoms begin. Starting with nausea, drooling and inability to breathe. The symptoms that concern me most are next on the list. The person exposed to Sarin Gas suffers a loss of control over their body functions, vomits, defecates and urinates. Not to mention, twitches, jerks, and eventually becomes comatose and suffocates in a series of convulsive spasms. Again, the basic ingredient for Sarin Nerve Gas is fluoride! Even if a small dose of fluoride helps our teeth, why aren’t we considering whether we are over-fluoridating our children? Other individuals are aware of the possibility of toxicity in over-fluoridating. There is a warning on the toothpaste not to swallow it for a reason.

Independent studies, over the last fifty years, have shown that sodium fluoride shortens life expectancy. Not only does it promote cancers, but research has shown that is contributes to mental disturbances or neurotoxicity caused by over-fluoridation. Some researchers even believe there is a direct correlation between Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and fluoride.

We, as a society, have been inundated with propaganda heralding the benefits brought with fluoridation. However, there is much more research and compelling evidence against having all this additional fluoride in our tap water, bottled water and even in our toothpaste. Let’s not forget that many schools annually provide our children with a small cup of fluoride rinse. As a parent did you receive information about the hazards of over-fluoridation with the consent form you signed to allow them to give fluoride to your child at school? I bet not, you were most likely presented with a nice paragraph highlighting the benefits of fluoridation. They neglect to ask; is your child is receiving additional fluoride from toothpaste, fluoridated bottled water (marketed specifically for children), from their dentist, or any other route? As parents, isn’t it time we stop allowing the state to decide if our families need additional fluoridation? At least take a moment to look at the history of fluoridation, look at what fluoride really is, and look at the research over the last fifty years about what it is doing to our bodies and our minds.

Some opponents even allege that the addition of fluoride so significantly impacts our mental capacity that it keeps people "stupid, subservient and docile." I’m not really sure about all of the chemical changes in the brain since I am not a chemist or a neuro-scientist, however, as a parent, I am sure that there is enough factual evidence about where fluoride comes from and what it is used for that it gets my attention. It most definitely deserves my attention when they hand it to my child in a cup at school or put it in my family’s drinking water. Having an EcoloBlue allows me to control the water my family is drinking so I don’t have to worry if they might possibly develop ADD or cancer from it.  www.EcoloBlue.com

SALTWATER IN CAMDEN, OHIO?

by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P.
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

What your neighbor has in his yard could affect your drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that a farm storing a large quantity of salt is the cause for contamination of the Camden, Ohio’s drinking water. The farm is located near the well field that supplies the city water source, serving a population of 2500.  According to the EPA, the salt has runoff into the groundwater and leached into the city’s dwindling water supply.

The contaminated water is not only affecting homes, but negatively impacting local businesses. One local restaurant says they are using bottled to service their customers due to the very salty taste of the water. Hundreds of residents displayed outrage at a city meeting demanding a resolution to the salt contamination of their water. The answers they received were not what they wanted to hear. The owner failed to acknowledgement responsibility or offer to take any action in correcting the issue and the EPA stated that they have no legal means to force the owner of the farm to relocate the salt, even though reports show the water is getting much saltier as time passes.

Salt, however, is not the only problem. City Officials say the city’s water supply is almost dry and acknowledged that there is only approximately 6 more weeks of drinking water left in the water storage. This is a serious concern for the city due to the inability to readily replace the water reserve. Officials reported that connecting to another city’s water supply may be an option, but it is very expensive for the city of only 2500.

STEP AWAY FROM THE FAUCET!
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer, could be in your water! New Jersey environmental officials say that more than 200,000 homes have elevated levels of Radon in their water. New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection has yet to set standards of what is a safe level drinking water. Given there are no guidelines to limit the cancer causing gas in drinking water, officials have suggested that citizens stand back from the water when they turn it on. In fact, over a dozen public water systems in the area of Morris County have higher levels of Radon than a state environmental committee suggested to be safe. Bottom line - the Radon in New Jersey's groundwater poses a greater risk than the already regulated chemicals, such as arsenic, lead or any VOC currently monitored.

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that produces health threatening results when found in drinking water. The risk associated with the exposure to Radon in tap water is the same as breathing it. Radon inhalation is second to only cigarette smoking as the leading cause of lung cancer. In fact, the EPA reports Radon causes 20,000 deaths per year. Drinking Radon contaminated water is also known to produce stomach cancer. The 1999 Congressional directive required the EPA to set standards for Radon testing for water supplies yet, currently there are no federal regulations governing acceptable Radon levels for indoor residential and school environments. The EPA did create guidelines based not only on risk considerations, but also on technical feasibility.

For the health of your family, please check with your local water provider to see if Radon is being monitored and if it has been detected in your water.  www.EcoloBlue.com

Uranium in the Water
by Regina D. Davis, M.S.,Q.M.H.P.
National Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life & Energy

Roman mythology referred to Uranus as “Father Heaven.” This planet inspired the name Uranium, the substance that is now considered to be as abundant as arsenic. Both are heavy metals, both are radioactive and both are found in somedrinking water. To originate from such a heavenly body, Uranium proves to be far from divine at all when it enters the body. In fact, it has a nephrotoxicity, meaning it has a poisonous effect on the kidneys of the human body.  Although very interesting information, my first question was “Does this really affect me?”  The answers that I found through much research is that not only does it affect me and millions alike, but the impact is staggering.

Understanding how vital water is to the human body is very important, we can all agree on that. However, understanding the content of the water we drink is just as vital. We assume a certain level of safety when it comes to our drinking water. In fact, we are often assured of the contents of our tap water by the individuals who provide it. For example, Anchorage Alaska declared that during routine testing of the water supply, high levels of uranium were reported for the Bering StraitVillage of Whales. Frank Crisci, the mayor of Whales, posted warnings of the high levels of uranium to the population, but declared that there was not an immediate risk.

Perhaps the notice was correct in that there may not be an immediate risk. However, lets take a look at the affects of uranium on the human body after immediate and long term exposure (inhalation, ingestion, and/or skin absorption). Some research has provided that after 20-40mg (weighed on individual basis) of uranium intake, there can be a detection of damage to the kidneys through urinalysis. The research also identified that between 50-150mg. (again weighed on individual basis) can produce cancer, acute kidney failure and even death. The water testing in Wales, Alaska was reportedly conducted between September and May 2009 and produced a 32mcg per liter result (30mcg is maximum allowed in public water supply).  Thus, allowing a significant period of time that the 150 residents of the Whales village to be unaware of any concern with the water they utilized for bathing, cooking, drinking, and so on. Unfortunately, there is not enough research on the long term exposure to determine if the health of the residents of this small village was compromised. So once again, I asked the question “How does this affect me?”

The list that I made of possible affects on my health include the most important topics I could discuss. As the mother of four wonderful children, I must place their health at the top of the list. It is my primary responsibility to advocate for them, as they are not yet able to do independently. Would I know if my children were consuming a potentially cancer causing, kidney damaging or deadly nephrotoxin in their drinking water for an entire year? I never knew the extent to which I was giving up control of the safety of my family until I did this research. Certain safety aspects of my life I have given over to other individuals, such as physical safety (fire, police and rescue), the safety of our food, and the safety of our drinking water. Given the option, I would gladly take that responsibility back for myself.  My next question was “How do I take the safety of my family's drinking water back into my hands, as a mother?” This is what I found: EcoloBlue.com

Myth Busted: Solar and Water Do Mix!
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Today in the Washington Business Journal an opinion was posed that Photovoltaic Solar Farms will reduce already strained water systems in the Southwest region of Arizona - and they are correct. That is, if there weren't systems like EcoloBlue's Industrial Atmospheric Water Generators which can not only create up to 1300 gallons of fresh water from humidity in the air (as I write these words the Relative Humidity in the state of Arizona ranges from 88 to 28 - either, optimal for water creation.)

The opinion editorialist (whose name I did not find in the online article) goes on to say that green and sustainable enterprises or ideas such as these are 'science projects' that are no closer to being realized then the Jetson's flying car. Not true, though, that is a common misconception for those who are not informed. I pose that a Solar Farm/Water Creation project would be a match made in sustainable heaven and one that isn't as far down the road as my fellow writer may believe. You don't have to be a Billionaire, Movie Star, or Compost-ista
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Although there are who couldn't care less about the lives of the rich, famous or combination of the two and their goings-ons, there's certainly something to be said for the multimillion dollar industry that focuses the fodder for those who lap it up like a cool glass of EcoloBlue water. If nothing else, this media/marketing driven Behemoth does one really great thing - brings credence, kudos, and education about many of the advances in Green Technologies utilized by those stars and gets the message into the minds of those who might otherwise not seek it out. Case in Point - Johnny Depp (Olivier of our times) has taken a 35-acre island in the middle of his former movie-set (The Carribean) and turned it into an Eco-Getaway that is (from reports) without rival. Word is that the area is a soon-to-be (if not already) self-sustaining habitat run completely on solar-hydrogen power. Most likely the place was also built with post-product materials, rain capturing devices, under-tree canopy construction, and has sought to retain as much of the eco-corridor areas for the pre-exiting biological habitat as possible. On the flip side of the "Eco-Razzi" coin, Diva darling Celine Dion and her hubby have created a massive water park in the backyard of their beach-side home near St. Augustine, Florida. From what reports say there, the facility requires equally massive amounts of water to run, reroute, and keep beautified. This is not a battle over who is more green or less green or builds correctly or what-have-you, it is a simple example of 'When the Stars Do It, We Notice More.'

It doesn't matter if you are into these stories or not, the people they focus on (or the eventual tales of people suing these society devils or darlings because of what they should do, could do, or have done before) but simply that it's certain that Green is the way to go and we can all make some headway - with or without a new Coach Bag and Jimmy Choos.

Both Mr. Depp and Lady Dion could both be well equipped and prepared for any water woe that comes their way with one fabulous and innovative green technology that makes both their garden grow and their slip-and-slide stay soaked - The EcoloBlue 200 to 5000 series of industrial Atmospheric Water Generators. Making any where from 53 gallons a day to over 1300 gallons a day with no addition water connection required, these units can provide drinking water, irrigation, and enough water left over to make a statement about sustainability good enough for a video on TMZ. Desalination: Worth its Salt?
by Thomas Ryan Ward

News was released recently that Australia is going to be taking the plunge and go forward with a several year/$13.2 billion dollar project to create desalination plants to turn seawater into potable water - allowing for 30% of all drinking water for the country to come from the sea. With reasons ranging from "global climate change" to, more simply, continuing water-source decline (read "The Water War Has Begun"), countries such as the United States and China are said to follow suit. But consumers and eco-watchdogs are not pleased by the decision, whether because of the certain rise in water costs to plants' potential harmful effects on the environment.

Natives of Queensland province are quoted as saying that the projects (including the finished $1 billion dollar plant that opened in that area last year_ were, "A big waste of money...it uses a lot of power...(with just) enough water for 22 million people. What are we going to do when we’re up to 36 million?”

Environmentalists and economists oppose desalination due to price and the process' believed contribution to global warming. The energy required in the salt removal operation is just half (exactly half, actually) the cost of the problem, while greenhouse gases are the other.

Australia (and everyone here at home) should take just a moment to see that these water woes can be avoided without such costly and extreme measures though Atmospheric Water Generators. EcoloBlue's Industrial units are tailor-made to fit these growing situations and allow individuals, communities (and soon nations?) to declare their Water Independence and work WITH the natural water that is already available to us in humidity. The more people learn about this process the more they quickly realize that desalination is not the wave of the future solution that it was chalked up to be. Too close to Home
by Thomas Ryan Ward

What a fascinating time for Meteorologists and the Army Corps of Engineers. For many weeks now, we at EcoloBlue have been following stories about many weather and infrastructure problems across the country. Just the other day the Lake Delhi Dam collapsed due to heavy rains while Bonnie blew through the Gulf, postponing Deepwater Horizon clean-up efforts. Before that, Boston's municipal pipes burst - leaving thousands without clean water for days. Tennessee flooded, California's wells got an F from the EPA, and Denver learned of its' aquifer depletion. Continuing: New Jersey is grappling with creeping nuclear seepage into ground water and residents of the Gulf fear COREXIT tar balls floating into their estuaries. Needless to say, there is a lot to write about and to solve through optimal filtration methods.

But, on a more personal note, EcoloBlue employees from Miami to New York have reported unexpected and thankful applications of their EcoloBlue AWGs this week. Whether our partners in Miami who were able to avoid standing in line for bottled water in preparation for the coming (and subsequent 100+ miles per hour winds and rain) of Tropical Storm Bonnie, to our affiliate in the Washington DC area whose EcoloBlue 30 kept him and his family hydrated after that city's power grid got knocked for a loop due to powerful storms, our friends in the mountains of Virginia who have been blasted for over three days with an onslaught of whipping winds, rain, and electrical storms that have blown transformers and felled trees - they have been running their EcoloBlue on emergency generator power, or our office in Columbia, South Carolina (the city whose motto is "Famously Hot") where their Sweet Tea intake is being kept afloat thanks to their solar powered EcoloBlue. Wouldn't you like to become Water Independent as well? Check out EcoloBlue.com for more information about finding a water solution that fits your needs.

CAPITAL WASTELAND
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Severe weather has whacked Washington DC and New York City's utilities into a chaos spiral today. Power, transportation, and many municipal water systems are offline forcing millions to sit-tight and ration for the water restrictions put in place. Reminiscent of Boston's infrastructure collapse only a few months ago, these two behemoth cities are making strides toward perpetual infrastructure issues in the coming weeks. Unprepared residents are finding fresh water a challenge, while the simple process of getting out of the house (for many) is not an option due to downed powerlines and felled trees.

Make sure that next time Mother Nature has a tantrum you have a solution to your drinking water needs that allows you and your family 99.9% pure water, powered independently by solar, wind, or fueled generator. Stop the cycle of becoming a statistic. Our home and office water generators can create up to 8 gallons of fresh water right out of the air or, as a 'hybrid unit', produce continuously pure water in times of emergency or anytime. Declare your Water Independce today at EcoloBlue.com

What Might Bonnie Bring?
By Thomas Ryan Ward

Less than a month ago several Louisiana residents posted shocking videos online focused on the up-until-that-time inconceivable situation of oil falling from the sky. Such a scenario directly goes against the commonly believed logic that because oil is heavier than air there is no way it could go into the air and come down as rain. Now, there is evidence.

Black Rain is something EcoloBlue has been talking about for several weeks now, retelling stories from eyewitnesses as well as friends and associates. This is not a test. This is a real crisis. And now, with the approach of Tropical Storm Bonnie finding her way toward the Deepwater Horizon area of the Gulf, the real problems are looming ever nearer.

Should residents be putting out large basins to catch as much Texas T as possible in the hopes of attaining free fuel? Obviously not. The best thing to do is to stay out of the rain or keep covered with protective gear (gloves, rain slicker, and boots.) Keep children and pets away from playing with the aftermath --- There are photos on the Internet of children playing with toxic COREXIT 9500 oil sludge on a stick. Where are the parents?

As much as we might like to say that our government and local officials know what to do and can provide direction and support in these times of multi-pronged problems, it is not always the case. We urge you to Be Prepared and Self-Sufficient. Make strides toward water and energy independence and spread the word. Sooner or later each and everyone of us will encounter a tragedy of some kind, whether natural or man-made, and it's during that time that those who have made a concerted effort, devised a plan, and connected with like-minded individuals will be ready to implement their knowledgeable choices. One great way: Declare your Water Independence with and EcoloBlue Water Generator, now with solar options, so you can begin your journey toward Full-time Preparedness. EcoloBlue allows you to create 99.9% pure water right out of the air, harnessing the humidity all around us. The 12-stage filtration and UV lights clean the air and the water to optimal freshness and give you and your family the security you need in trying times or anytime you want fresh, delicious water.

Preparation: Time for Plan B
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Hurricane Season is picking up with the approach of a large and powerful Tropical Storm Bonnie just north of Cuba, heading into the Gulf. At this time, Bonnie is a Tropical Depression but has the potential of becoming a more dangerous storm by the hour. We at EcoloBlue continue to caution our online community about the inherit difference and seriousness of this hurricane season not just due to strengthening winds and powerful gales but the unknown health effects that could come about due to Deepwater Horizon. Dispersants and other chemicals (not forgetting hazardous oil and methane) continue to loom as a contributing factor that will make Hurricane Season 2010 unlike any other.

Hurricane Preparedness Week has come and gone yet many still have not taken the necessary actions to ensure the safety of self, family health, and property. Don't wait for FEMA and the EPA to give aid or a green light on the most required of resources. Make sure you have at least 2 weeks of non-perishable food stuffs and clean drinking water. EcoloBlue offers a modern and sustainable solution to your drinking and preparedness needs with our EcoloBlue 30 and 30s Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs.) Coupled with Solar or fuel generators during timed of emergency, these units can be your drinking water lifeline - especially when what is coming from your tap may have been compromised by what is in the Gulf and in the air. Our AWGs purify water and air to 99.9% purity, creating up to 8 gallons of off-the-grid water in a 24 hr period. When added to your existing water system, it can continuously produce 99.9% pure water as a 'hybid' - protecting your drinking water from bacteria, contaminants, run-off and other unwanted unknows. Deepwater Cap: Final Solution?
by Thomas Ryan Ward

The term 'Permian Extinction Event' might not be as catchy as The Big Bang or The Great Mystery (what some scientists have dubbed the 'comet theory' for Dino demise) but experts do agree that roughly 251 million years ago a monumental methane explosion poisoned the atmosphere and destroyed more than 96 percent of all life on Earth. Evidence of this subterranean methane catastrophe has been the focus of everyday media viewer-ship for over 2 and half months now, the crater known as the Gulf of Mexico. Alarmists and conservatives alike are now hypothesising that BP’s Deepwater Horizon Disaster may have also triggered a methane event which (unlike recent capping efforts on the oil-well) will be irreversible and unstoppable. Who are these nameless prophets of doom telling tales of End Times? Conspiracy theorists? Fundamental fanatics? No. One such believer is Northwestern University bio-chemical engineer Gregory Ryskin.

Ryskin theorizes that our oceans naturally experience powerful methane eruptions but BP has simply helped the process along. Signs of such an impending episode starts with 'boiling seas' of CO2 and H2S which reach the atmosphere and flood land. In stark contrast to typical methane on land which is lighter than air, methane from sea water is heavy with water droplets and therefore spreads over the land, mixing with air, and returns as rain which is easily ignited by lightning or man-made flames (burn-off from rigs?) Other signs of a possible event include the sea-floor splitting open and water-tables rising (note that many regions as far north as eastern Canada have been experiencing unprecedented earthquakes recently.)

The Gulf Coast, no matter what optimistic tourist-enticing reports may say, still has the ability to become overcome by poisonous and cancer causing chemical gases (on top of the 'classified' COREXIT dispersants.) Is the press misleading us? Not exactly. Instead they cannot report on what they do not know as the federal government has created a $40,000 fine for anyone near the spill's epicenter which additional fear of felony arrest.

Deadzones, Black Rain, Boiling Seas, Methane and Benzene...these aren't just buzz-words but some of the new realities that our Gulf Coast States must face. We at EcoloBlue offer those seeking a fresh, drinking water security solution our various EcoloBlue Products. Whether our EcoloBlue 30s (sparkling water systems), EcoloBlue 30 (which provides up to 8 gallons of hot or cold water), or our many Industrial Units (which meet all your fresh water needs with outputs from 59 gallons a day to 1300 gallons a day, straight from air), you can drink safely knowing that 12 stage filtration is at your fingertips. All these systems are Hybrid Units as well, ensuring that even municipal water piped into your EcoloBlue is filtered to 99.9% purity. Learn more about attaining Water Independence at EcoloBlue.com

Quake History Repeats as California is Rocked with 5.4 Tremor
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Many have heard that there was a 5.4 earthquake near Palm Springs, California  on the San Jacinto fault yesterday and that it was followed by more than 60 aftershocks. Earthquakes are nothing new to California, but they shouldn't go by without notice. Many don't remember the 1901 San Francisco quake that knocked out that area's water systems for weeks at a time (read about this story at SF Museum) but it feeds right in to what Quake Preparedness experts stress continuously: "electrical, water, transportation, and other vital systems can be disrupted for several days or much longer in some places after a large earthquake. Emergency response agencies and hospitals could be overwhelmed and unable to provide you with immediate assistance."

Simply stated: take responsibility for your needs and loved ones with stored food, safe water and amble power. EcoloBlue Atmospheric Water Generators provide those in earthquake zones and in other naturally occurring destruction areas the security of fresh water with green/sustainable power options such as solar and wind. Don't let history simply repeat itself. Be informed and make informed choices. Learn more at www.EcoloBlue.com

Grid Failure as the Mercury Continues to Rise
by Thomas Ryan Ward

If you are living in most areas of the East Coast, you are certain to be reading this bathing yourself in air conditioning or with a fan blowing near by to keep these 2010 Summer Highs at bay - but more than likely, you aren't allowed. Allowed? Yes, Energy Restrictions (just like the many Water Restrictions posted about here by EcoloBlue) are being enforced in many of our cities. Yesterday, New York hit 103F, Washington DC - 102 degrees, and Baltimore - 101, each beating their highest records yet. As we all know, heat exhaustion, dehydration, sun stroke, sun burn, and respiratory issues can all arise when people (especially children and pets) cannot get out of the heat or drink enough liquids - but this summer we are looking at a new danger that is not as often discussed...Grid Failure and Infrastructure Collapse due to overheated cities.

Brown-outs, gray-outs, and full out blackouts occur because the hotter it gets, the more people use electricity to cool themselves. The more energy usage, the more strain on the utilities companies...and that leads to service interruption, breakage, and many times, disastrous failures due to exploding conductors and overworked hardware systems.

A new twist on the dangers, New York's Transportation Authority tells of main drawbridges along the railroad and main waterway arteries being 'locked down' for fear that the heat was so intense that the actual bolts that hold the bridges together could warp, be comprised and collapse. Similar situations were made public about train lines, that take high over-city rails, that had to be rerouted or shut down entirely. Medical teams could not reach many of the 3,000 plus emergency calls (many directly relating to heat stroke and dehydration) and ConEd and Fire Crews' work got delayed due to over 300 fire hydrants a day being illegally tapped. The stories are similar in every city because their infrastructure, fail-safes, procedures, components, underground infrastructure, railways and roadways are not only antiquated, out-of-date, but also in terrible disrepair to the point of irreparable damage with no money available to update them. This is going to be a continuing scenario as time progresses - and as we know about records, they are made to be broken. As the 2012/2013 massive solar emissions predicted by the scientific space community loom closer, not only are these day-to-day failures certain but our entire grid (not just light, water and power but technology, transportation and communication.)

Preparation: The Ball is in Your Court
by Thomas Ryan Ward

As the World Cup and Wimbledon rage on (and South African, EcoloBlue founder Wayne Ferreira and his partner Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeat Richard Krajicek, Netherlands, and Michael Stich, Germany 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-7 tiebreak) disastrous storm clouds are forming in the Gulf. Hurricane Alex's path of mass destruction has come to areas that recently believed they'd seen the last of their oil spill clean up nightmares.

"The sad thing is that it's been about three weeks since we had any big oil come in here," marine science technician Michael Malone said. "With this weather, we lost all the progress we made."

Tar balls the size of apples are being washed ashore all along the Mississippi Delta and Northern Florida coast. BP has suspended skimming, controlled burning, and dispersant spraying operations even though no "direct hit" on the spill site is eminent. As if this isn't bad enough, the EPA is setting up what they call “Decontamination Stations” after more than 400 people recently sought medical attention after visiting Florida beaches. Beachgoers are asked to avoid touching oily products that they may discover on the beach and in the water and are asked to seek medical help if they experience respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, and eye irritation after visitation. The new two-piece? A haz-mat suit and gas mask. News Flash - It is just going to get worse before it gets better.

"Don't drink the water" is the mantra of the day all along the coastal regions with stories of Black Rain, Acid Rain, and Contamination run-off reaching wells and streams. Clean up crews and residents alike are suffering flu-like symptoms that echo those still impacting the region where the notorious Exxon Valdez occurred.

Be Proactive not "part of the pack". Ensure you and your family (and neighbors and town) have safe, clean, sustainable and available drinking water by investing in Water Independence. Don't wait for the EPA and FEMA to tell you when to leave or what to drink. Get an easy-to-operate and power efficient EcoloBlue product that meets your needs for today and tomorrow from our wide variety of atmospheric water generator solutions. Whether 8 gallons in a 24 hour period or 1,300 Gallons, your EcoloBlue will create 99.9% pure water right out of the humidity in the air - cleaning and eliminating particulates and bacteria, producing life-giving refreshment. The Water War Has Begun
By Thomas Ryan Ward

The need, right, and ability to obtain and utilize fresh clean drinking water has always been a powder-keg situation through history...and now the battle has come to modern day America. The Falcon Dam is under attack.

Once a marvel of engineering and a symbol of cultural cooperation, the Falcon Dam on the Rio Grande between Starr County, Texas and Tamaulipas was built for conservation, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and recreational purposes as an international border crossing between the two countries - dedicated in October 1953 by Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adolfo Ruiz Cortines.
Now...it is a potential battleground for modern day America's first Water War.

Last month border patrols and officials from both The United States and Mexico scrambled to stop one of the most powerful Mexican drug cartels, Los Zetas, from destroying the Falcon in an attempt to cripple a rival cartels' trade routes and send a message to over 4 million residential customers. If lain to waste, huge swaths of federally and privately owned agricultural land would have become flooded marshy wasteland.

Los Zetas is a powerful and insidious militant group comprised of an elite assassin force, army deserters, corrupt ex-federal, state, and local police officers. Thanks to escalating border violence due to tougher restrictions on U.S. access and environmental regulations enforced by the Department of Interior, Los Zetas are searching to make a statement. Devising such an operation against the 5-mile-long dam would require special access, means, knowledge and motivation - all of which Los Zetas is slowly but surely amassing. Though thwarted this time, this event will not simply fade away. This is the beginning of our water resources truly coming under attack. The next 'big event' will not be a building or a plane...but water.

This is not a test. This is the beginning of the Water Wars. With dwindling aquifer levels, contaminated wells, estuaries, lakes, streams and rivers, this country is going to understand the gravity of what that implies. Be proactive and Be Prepared. Learn how an EcoloBlue Atmospheric Water Generator can ensure you and your family have safe, affordable, pure and delicious water at all times. Learn more at EcoloBlue.com

Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble: The Gulf's Silent Killer
By Thomas Ryan Ward

As if the situation in the Gulf wasn't playing out like Sophoclean tragedy already, in comes Shakespearean gloom and doom - the water in the panhandle of Florida is bubbling. My opinion on this situation is that the Methane being released from the Deep Water Horizon Spill is leading to an additionally large Kill Zone which has found its way to the northern shores. Methane Gas creates an atmosphere of Oxygen Depletion, becoming an asphyxiant, which creates health effects from breathing and pulse rate increase to abnormal fatigue and disturbed respiration, nausea and vomiting, and finally, loss of consciousness, respiratory collapse and death.

Needless to say, high levels of exposure to Methane is a serious issue that, sadly, due to the fact that it is colorless, odorless and relatively invisible, makes it seem like less of an immediate concern to those watching the Gulf Disaster on television or the web. We already know that this Silent Killer is one of the main reasons that this Spill has been so difficult to cap. It is the Methane, not the oil, that recently forced the containment cap to fail and it is Methane Crystals making the continued syphoning efforts not only difficult but highly volatile. A simple online search will show that residents are becoming more than just concerned about the tourism and fishing industry but talking about relocation away from the Gulf entirely.

This drastic measure can be prevented by making a choice that is not only environmentally friendly but also economically sound - making sure that you and your family have safe, clean and delicious 99.9% pure drinking water right out of humidity in the air. EcoloBlue Atmospheric Water Generators provide peace of mind and offer a sound solution in both emergency situations and anytime you want fresh and continuously available drinking water with no water connection required. Our solar options also provide owners with the knowledge that no matter where or when, their EcoloBlue Water Generator will be bringing them the best water on the planet. The New Grid Grab: a Move to Water
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Not long ago I had an enlightening conversation with my family about the nature of 'worth and value' leading to the inevitable question posed to me - "Why is Gold worth anything?"

The answer in modern times is simple: Gold is one of the most incredibly conductive, stupendously mailable, and near incorruptible products our planet has to offer. In the world of technology, that goes even farther with circuitry, conductive grids, nano-components, and all kinds of innovative device uses. "But," my loved-one responded,"you can't eat it or drink it! In the end, isn't that what really matters?" In a word - yes. And at this time, many of the biggest names in industry are starting to catch on.

ORACLE, the software technologies, integrated network giant is turning its massive gaze into the future...and the future is water. As Linda Jackman (VP of Product Strategy) recently stated at The Networked Grid Conference,"Water will be bigger than power is today."

Why water? Why now?

People across the world are waking up to a sobering fact that many less industrialized nations have understood as a core component of daily life for millenia - 'they' that own the water, own the world.

Whether a well, estuary, aquifer, lake, stream, spring or river, freshwater is an unfathomably important (no pun intended) and difficultly renewable resource. This is the domain of the all-powerful Water Baron...but more on that later.

Many people do not realize that the water that comes out of their tap everyday is part of only 1% of the Earth's global water supply that is fresh and available for drinking. As water consumption has risen in industrialized nations, so has the need and utilization of what industries dub 'virtual water'.
Virtual Water means the water that is necessary in all aspects of product creation. Whether a wet-saw is cutting through a granite tile floor, someone is flushing a holding vat or control piping, or a steam-automated textile loom is on-duty, water is a necessary evil that companies would certainly like to do without (to be more efficient or more 'green') but the process of creating their product is 'life-blooded' by Virtual Water. Some businesses have gone that extra mile to make sure their water is reused or repurposed - hopefully being filtered enough to make it viable to run the systems' gamut a few more times - but in the end, more water is generally required...and that brings us back to 'Water Barons'.

Just as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are to money and their respective business pursuits, so are Water Barons to their aquatic sources.

In the impoverished San Luis Valley of Colorado there was one Water Baron (whom I will allow to remain anonymous) whose 100,000-acre land grab (initially part of an 1824 Mexican land grant which includes national monuments like Kit Carson Peak and the Great Sand Dunes) sits above a six miles deep sand shallow holding at least 2 billion acre-feet of water. 50 times the capacity of both Lakes Powell and Mead.

"Why is this a concern? He bought the land, he deserves its reward," you may argue. Well, that is where a Water Baron can become greedy. This particular Baron plans to sell the neighboring cities some of the only freshwater available, especially to the schools and hospitals (which his pitch makes the most reaped rewards from), at $5,000 an acre-foot...or $750 million. Yes, "Water is going to be bigger than energy," and in Enron-like proportions.

It is time to declare your Water Independence. Get off the ever-growing grid. Make your own water for you and your family at 99.9% purity with continuous availability. Purchase an EcoloBlue home or industrial unit and create anywhere from 8 to 1,300 gallons of water on a daily basis with no water connection required. Water straight from the air at 20¢ per gallon is an investment you can't afford to be without in the coming years. The 'Smartest People in the Room' know about this coming trend and the cost it will bring to the average homeowner - get ahead of the Grid Grab and own an EcoloBlue.

Don't Play the Gasland Game
by Thomas Ryan Ward

Many Americans are experiencing an economic boom in these troubled times that seems too good to be true - and it is.
Reports and testimonials are growing on a silent land lease program across the country where Natural Gas companies come to small communities and offer land owners a range of tempting cash-in-hand offers for land leasing in return for the chance to set up shop and begin a process called Hydraulic Fracturing (which sounds bad enough) more commonly known as Fracking.

I'm sure we've all seen the commercials playing on cable networks over the course of the past 3 years or so featuring an attractive, impeccably dressed, pseudo-Anglophilic  spokeswoman asking "do you know where most of America's energy solutions come from?" and then providing statistics which seem incredible - nearly all our gas needs are provided and can be provided right here! For many people, these commercials were the trumpeting prior to the entrance of gas companies in their areas, priming them with patriotism and the promise of ready money in hard times. What many of these companies often fail to do is explain the Fracking process - how it contaminates water wells and waterways, produces toxic runoff, leads to animal disease and death, total area decimation, and, when the process is over and the product all sapped up, the companies will leave residents with unsellable lands - making that initial cash-in-hand look like a slap in face or spit on their shoes.

GASLAND, a new documentary film premiering on HBO this month, was created by Pennsylvanian Josh Fox, whose family was presented one of these tempting offers. Unlike many of his neighbors, Mr. Fox not only investigated the effects Hydraulic Fracturing could have on his land and water but went one step farther - traveling the nation to learn more. Fox sought out individuals and communities which had "taken the Fracking bait" and have been left with not just egg on their faces but contamination in their water.

Sustainable energy is possible, though many times the processes and production to get our nation there are not as simple. Our goals should be simple - combat scenarios such as these, fighting exploitation and uncovering community manipulation (whether through greed or fear.) In the meantime, communities such as these need fresh water and a solution like the EcoloBlue 5000 which creates over 1,300 gallons of water in a 24 hour period right out of the humidity in the air! Learn more about Gasland, educate you and your neighbors about these deceptive and destructive practices, and let them know there are solutions available right now - through EcoloBlue.com

It Came from Above!
by Thomas Ryan Ward

"Without warning, it awoke from its slumber and came from above. The fiery flash of magnetic pulse lashed our planet's protective atmosphere like a ray gun from the gods, leaving a wake of devastation in its path. The National power grid burned out, air travel was crippled, personal computers, cell phones, online banking, ATMs, and millions of other devices were reduced to useless hunks of metal and plastic. The attack was over in seconds but the aftermath lasted not only days and weeks but months. It came from above!"

No, this isn't a trailer for an upcoming science fiction movie or graphic novel, it is very possibly exactly what every newspaper headline in the world will read after a massive Solar Flare slams into Earth - a scenario which NASA scientists have been warning about for over a year now. This Solar Storm has been dubbed a "once-in-a-generation” event, an apex moment when the Sun will reach maximum heat and capacity (10,000 F or 5500C)...and NASA says it is but 3 years away.

What does this mean? It is time for us to wake up and prepare. This isn't a politically driven debate about global warming or polar bears, this is data driven information provided based on previous occurrences on our planet. Why then, if it has happened before, are we more sensitive to reacting? You are reading it. The Internet, cell phones, credit, banking, shipping, anything (and potentially everything) that has a computer chip driving it has the potential of failing - perhaps permanently. Also, when the grid goes down, the tap turns off. It's time to find alternate ways of sustaining you and your family. Solar, wind, generators with long-term backup fuel and your own water creation system, the EcoloBlue, to get you through "the storm". Don't let a lack of preparation make you a victim. Declare your resource independence (water and energy) today. Learn more at EcoloBlue.com

A Potentiality for Danger
by Thomas Ryan Ward

We live in an incredible time, one which, everyday, I wake into with amazement and joy, realizing it truly is the best time in human history. Many may immediately disagree with romantic ideas about the Renaissance or nostalgia surrounding the 1950s or 60s. But, looking back through the lens of logic, one can easily see that this time we live in (and subsequently the time which will come after it) is truly best on multiple levels.

I read a fascinating book recently that is the core of a whole new scientific study that attempts to tell history through smell. Yes, smell. As we know, we humans have an ingenious recall machine up in our bony skulls that works in ways we still can't understand. Yet one thing is clear - scents recall memories. Why should we care about how time smelled before?

Here are just a few reasons:

You are reading a Dickens' novel and are exposed to the various smells that would have occurred in 19th century London - immediately one is astonishingly affronted by the conditions that familiar characters of this time would had to deal with on a daily basis. Excrement, disease and decay, mold, rot, a mass of heavy tobacco smoke, and overall poor hygiene - and this in only the 1800s! Go back farther in time and we have an even less romantic scene where human existence truly was "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

We have decompartmentalized nature's mysteries into everyday knowledge, our potential for acts of kindness and charity have undoubtedly increased (even if we don't say we see it), law and order are available to us with general efficiency and are similar in construct across most nations, and, as we get better equipped with technology, wars may soon be won remotely or not at all.

So why the title of this entry, "A Potentiality for Danger?"

Because as we get ever closer to a harmonious meeting between technology, humanity, science, and society, two major factors begin to loom in our way - Population and Resources.

Certainly we have all seen or read science fiction stories about society breaking-down over a lack of one essential resource alone - water. As populations across the planet continue to escalate, the statistical need for and availability of water fall out of balance. It is already happening. Many places, even in our own country, don't have clean and available drinking water to support humans, crops, animal life, and sanitary needs. Reports crop up daily about contamination of water sources from streams to underground aquifers due to human error or outright malicious misconduct. Children are being born deformed, diseased, or dead due to nitrate levels, mercury, lead, or nuclear waste now seeping through our water systems, wells, and waterways.

"But wait," you may exclaim, "didn't you just argue this is the best time in human history so far?"

Yes and for good reason. All of the above resource issues, especially water quality and availability, are within our grasp to combat. For the first time in human history, we can create pure, clean, sustainable drinking water straight out of humidity in the air around us with Atmospheric Water Generators. 12 stages of filtration ensure the quality, UV lights kill bacteria and germs from the air and replaces it with clean (so your environment will smell even better than before), while it runs on very little power from electric, fuel generators, solar, or wind, and soon, we may be able to run them on Hydroelectric Power. Water creation is not simply for the rich and powerful but available to all people at an affordable price. With AWGs in place, the resource problems could be reversed or redesigned, toxicity will be removed, contaminants cleansed, and communities hydrated in the knowledge that they are drinking 99.9% pure water for the first time in their lives. Yes, it is a great and amazing time for human history and the Earth a more amazing planet to live on thanks to technology. Enjoy it and drink up with EcoloBlue.

Hurricane Preparedness: This is the Moment
by Thomas Ryan Ward, Director of Education, EcoloBlue Life and Energy

Many of us know, thanks to previous storm seasons and reports from Hurricane Preparedness Week informationals, it is the time to think about making our homes, communities, and families safe for 2010 - a storm season already reported to have deadly potential.

An easy outline provided by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and an additional Disaster Kit from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) will allow you to have the steps/tools you need to get through this time with assured preparedness.

Here are some steps to follow:
 - Listen to the radio or TV for information.
 - Secure your home, close storm shutters, and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
 - Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest
setting and keep its doors closed.
- Turn off propane tanks.· Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
 - Moor your boat if time permits.
 - Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the
bathtub and other large containers with water.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.
If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure—such shelters are particularly hazardous during hurricanes no matter how well fastened to the ground.
If you live in a high-rise building—hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an inland waterway.
If you feel you are in danger.
If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines:

Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
Close all interior doors—secure and brace external doors.
Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm - winds will pick up again.
Take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.
Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.

The DISASTER KIT goes as follows:

- Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
- Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
— foods for infants or the elderly
— snack foods
— non-electric can opener
— cooking tools / fuel
— paper plates / plastic utensils

- Blankets / Pillows, etc.
- Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
- First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs
- Special Items - for babies and the elderly
- Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes
- Flashlight / Batteries
- Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
- Telephones - Fully charged cell phone, extra battery, and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
- Cash (small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
- Keys
- Toys, Books and Games
- Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
- Tools - keep a set with you during the storm
- Vehicle fuel tanks filled
- Pet care items
— proper identification / immunization records / medications
— ample supply of food and water
— a carrier or cage
— muzzle and leash

Follow these guidelines and make sure you and your family are secure and prepared.
When it comes to a disaster, as we have seen in Hurricane Seasons past, rescue crews and resources may not reach all those in need in a timely fashion. Take it upon yourself to Be Prepared.

One great way, is to make your own water with a SOLAR powered EcoloBlue - providing 8 gallons of fresh, clean water for your needs which can run (in emergency situations) from a battery powered by the sun.

In the Wake of the Water Warrior

by Thomas Ryan Ward

Google may not create a  memorable logo to commemorate the death of one of America's foremost Water Warriors this week but none the less Mr. Murray Stein is someone we should all remember. Heralded as the "Federal Government's Mr. Clean", Mr. Stein was one of the first from that political city to take a long look over our great nation and begin rallying against a situation that many were either too afraid or too apathetic to tackle - water quality.

Beginning in 1957, Mr. Stein traveled the country systematically seeking out felonious polluters from Maine to Louisiana. Though he was trained as a lawyer, Mr. Stein instead took a revolutionary approach to communicating the need to make environmental changes in our dirtiest waterways - conversation. Known best for traveling to an area and creating a face-to-face dialog with offenders and affectees, Mr. Stein's open policy allowed companies to make the "right decision" and volunteer to make changes while saving face.

He was an important figure in the formative years of the EPA's creation, aiding the first EPA administrator, William D. Ruckelshaus in finding and battling water pollution areas. "When Bill Ruckelshaus wanted to move out with an aggressive enforcement program, Murray (Mr. Stein) could tell him where to begin."

We should all take his legacy to heart not only by acknowledging the choices he made to foster true change in our nation's path toward ecological conscienceness not just consciousness but to find a bit of his courage in ourselves - making small changes everyday to reuse, repurpose, and start our own Water Revolution by utilizing less destructive means to our water needs. A great way to start is an EcoloBlue Atmospheric Water Generator. Here's to you, Mr. Stein, and the mission you leave in our hands.

The Darker Side of Recycling or One Area's Win
by Thomas Ryan Ward

The story is not a new one: company seeking to cut corners, skirt fines, and relieve their industrial plant of toxic waste, dumps pollutants in local water systems. But this story is perhaps rare for one reason...a happy ending.

For the past several months (perhaps longer) Fox River Valley residents in Illinois have been discovering dead fish in their rivers and streams.
The culprit may surprise you...a recycling plant.

A South Elgin recycling company, D & Y Trade Inc., has been brought up on felony charges - one count for each act of pollution and additional charges for each misdemeanor by the Kane County grand jury. The company's chief executive officer, Yu Tan Zheng, and an employee, An Hong, have been found to be the responsible parties. Worst of all is the news that the recycling plant had been operating without a permit and a zoning investigation was underway far before the dumping.

This situation isn't to be last in a long line of ecological violations but it certainly should raise awareness for people who depend on our waterways for travel, commerce, and irrigation. It is time to take water quality into our own hands. A great way to do so? The EcoloBlue home and industrial units, creating 99.9% pure water for drinking, cleaning, and irrigation...a solution that's not only proactive but environmentally forward.
Remember: reuse, repurpose, and start your own Water Revolution against local and worldwide pollution by making choices that aid everyone.

Lost (but not thirsty) on Gas Island

by Thomas Ryan Ward

I found myself in a strange moral dilemma the other evening cruising up I-95 after receiving that most unwelcome of messages from my trusty automobile - I was out of gas. Realizing I was very near my destination but not close enough to wish to play "fuel tank chicken" and arrive "running on fumes", I pulled off at a well lit highway exit lousy with ubiquitous gas station signs. What a variety. But which to chose and why? BP, Exxon, Chevron, Shell - The names of each called forth emotional responses.

BP = Gulf Spill

Exxon = Valdez

Chevron = Chavez

Shell = New Alaskan 2 Billion Dollar Offshore Bid

(drilling right next door to 1 of North America's 2 polar bear habitats)

None of these options made my consumer's conscience sing. What a position to be in!

Sadly, we are not yet at the point yet where Photovoltaic/Solar, Hydrogen, and Wind can come together and make our lives Grid-free. Fossil Fuel consumption (say some researchers) will increase 34 percent by 2030. What does that mean to you and me? Basically that unless we take action and begin making strides to find our own alternative sources for powering our day-to-day lives, we will need to put our eco-conscience aside when it comes to the Gas Island.

"What's the silver lining to this article?," you may be asking.Well, even if (at the moment) we can't run our homes with the click of a button and soak up the sun (thank you Sheryl Crow) we can stop a hugely wasteful situation that lends to that 34 percent increase - Plastic bottles created from Fossil Fuels.
Many people don't think about the fact that when they pick up that frosty looking, well-marketed, bluish bottle of water that they are in turn wasting water. Wasting water? What does that mean?

At this time, the average amount of water needed in the factories to create those bottles of water (excluding the water contained within) is nearly 10 times the finished product. That's like turning on a tap to fill a thimble then letting the water run for 30 seconds. Sounds silly, huh? Well, it is.

That's why even though we all might not be off-the-grid or creating our own energy to sell back to the power company, we all can take a first step in the right direction - saving water by making our own with EcoloBlue. So, next time you stop to make a decision about which gas company to patronize at least you can do so while well hydrated by your personal water creator, the EcoloBlue.

A Lack of Data is not a Lack of Evidence

By Thomas Ryan Ward

As the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Spill continues its destructive reign over what was but a few weeks ago a buzzing center for oceanic commerce, vacationers' paradise and a bustling home to an ecological rainbow of newly birthed creatures, reports are being bandied about, fears voiced, and facts withheld (or "conservatively monitored") about a word that, for many Americans, was hardly ever heard before the crisis began - Dispersants.

One dispersant in particular, COREXIT, is a seemingly miraculous substance that, from a chemical standpoint, does the impossible - bonds water and oil. Remember high school chemistry's often memorized statement "Like dissolves Like?"
"No more," say creators of COREXIT, "That kind of time tested science is for chumps!"

While we're still in a high school state of mind - think of the Gulf Spill and our efforts against it as an epic battle torn from the pages of a comic book. With this analogy in place, COREXIT is the new, laboratory created Super Secret Compound released to forever end the ongoing battle between two of the biggest chemically battling foes since the dawn of time - OIL and WATER!
This SUPER PRODUCT (once dispersed) rips these two compounds to their very "CORE" and creates a NEW CREATION that the good/mad scientists who created the product have termed "Chocolate Mousse".

Aw, Chocolate Mousse. Who doesn't like Chocolate Mousse?
Yes, even in the world of science, "Marketeers" have joined forces to make a potentially threatening chemical dispersant sound cute and cuddly, and in doing so, set out to allay the publics' fears that COREXIT is as commonplace as Crisco, dependable as Clorox, and less destructive then a delicious dessert of French origin. Wrong.

The hardest part of getting to the truth of COREXIT is finding data that doesn't have enough marketing spin or techno jargon to either make you take the bait or quickly lose interest. Here are some of my favorites:

FUZZY:
"...in 1991, household dish soap (was found) as having a substantially higher rainbow trout toxicity than COREXIT 9527 (making it) 7 times safer than dish soap. COREXIT 9500 is the next generation of COREXIT products and features an improved formula.” Link

Yes, that's right. No real information - just spin. Better than this though...

GEEKY:
COREXIT 9500 toxicty (Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals, L.P., Sugar Land, TX)
"Unfortunately, because of the proprietary nature of this product’s formulation, precise identification of its constituents is not possible here.
It is characterized by the manufacturer as (being) similar to...COREXIT 9527."

Basically they can't tell us what it is because Exxon/Nalco won't tell THEM (the people supposedly testing it) what it is.
But there's more...

The acute effects on two marine species (with) Corexit 9500
"...data indicated substantially more delayed mortality...test animals survived up to 2–3 days after initial exposure before dying. This may be reflective of differences in the formulation of 9500, but without specific constituent information, which is proprietary and unavailable, no specific conclusions can be drawn. (It does not) appear to be significantly different from those (effects) associated with the use of Corexit 9527." Link

So, it kills LATER than the last batch but still we don't know what's in it so...um...no more info is available.

These two similarly loopy answers (or dispersions) to the COREXIT question make apprehension to use of the product logical. We live in a society of disclaimers from coffee cups at drive-thru windows to over-the-counter medication. Let's get real.

Nalco/Exxon: Give us the worst case scenarios so we can deal with the reality that using this product offers. Give us the pros AND the cons. Let the private sector and public decide if the ends do justify the means. Give us a timeline. Give us something. But don't just do a COREXIT cover-up dance or media spin. It's demeaning, it's frightening, and overall more outwardly political than a "humanitarian effort" should be.
