www.convoyofhope.org As of January 17, the confirmed death toll was 70,000. That number is sure to rise as more bodies are discovered. The Red Cross estimates that over 3 million people will be ultimately affected. Tragically, the earthquake is still wreaking destruction. Many thousands more, though they may have been spared death from collapsing buildings, face devastation due to the lack of food, drinking water and medical aid. In the midst of the rubble, there is hope. Convoy of Hope has been working in Haiti for several years. When the earthquake hit, country director Kevin Rose was visiting the site where Convoy feeds 7,000 children daily. Due to a full warehouse and an established partner network within the country, Convoy of Hope was able to begin responding immediately. Our staff on the ground sums it up well: "Our partners have allowed us access to parts of the city into which we could have never gotten. Without them, we would be like many other relief organizations that have food and supplies in country but are facing enormous logistical and security problems getting those items distributed." Convoy staff and their partners are working diligently to set up water filtration units and assist in medical aid. Meanwhile, desperate Haitians line up outside of nine different Convoy food distribution points. To date, Convoy has been able to provide 164,696 meals to those who are hurting. Because of your faithful support, ten more containers filled with supplies are set to ship this week. The situation remains dire. According to Kevin Rose, the amount currently in the warehouse ".will last 10 to 14 more days. We need to replenish the warehouse as fast as we can to ensure that we can keep feeding the children in our program while also continuing to provide food for those who are suffering from the earthquake. We will keep ramping up and distributing more food, medical supplies, and other necessities. The need will not go away today or tomorrow. that's why we'll be here for weeks and months to come." We cannot thank you enough for enabling us to make a difference during such devastating times. |
